I didn't really know what this movie was about. I was a bit surprised by the story. I didn't know the situation, but I thought it was interesting to see.

A lot of famous people in this movie. They all spoke Kempish, although I thought one did a little better than the other.

Furthermore, it all felt realistic and you had a 70s feel to it.

Worth seeing, I didn't immediately have a wow feeling, but fine to pick up on TV.

Vegetables from Balen has become an extremely enjoyable mainstream Flemish film. Also very recognizable about the life of a simple Kempen working family in the 1970s. Smaller than in the 1980s in GB, but equally intense for the people, strikes break out in the factory where breadwinner Jan (Stany Crets) works.

Nice atmosphere setting about the working working class fighting like a kind of modern Don Quixote's, a capitalist system from which in principle there is no escaping. The working class and the bourgeoisie are well portrayed, albeit all within the lines, so that Van Mechelen too often plays it safe with this tragicomedy with a highly palatable feel-good content, but as I said, the mayonnaise does take hold. This also has to do with the strong cast with also a nice fresh Evelien Bosmans. The Kempen accent is also touching.

Out of nostalgia, recognizability and chauvinism a decent 3.5*, you can clearly see that time and effort has been put into it, apart from the fact that the plot could have been a bit more penetrating.

Very decent Flemish film that moves to the early seventies with strong social and family situations (worker conflicts, strikes, financial setbacks, also unwanted pregnancy ...)

The script is smooth, folk, sometimes a bit surprising in the sequence of the scenes and the acting is usually good. Stany Crets in particular reveals himself to be very solid in the profession.
