We Bought a Zoo plot

"A True Zoo Story"

'We Bought a Zoo' is based on the true story of former Guardian journalist Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon) who, after the death of his wife, buys a dilapidated zoo in the American countryside with his last savings. Refurbishing the zoo is accompanied by some obstacles and privately there are also a few things to consider.

“I like the animals. I love the people.”

Another great movie from Cameron Crowe. The man can sometimes go a bit too far in his stories drenched in melancholy, but when everything is perfectly balanced, it produces gems of films. The greatest strength of We Bought a Zoo is in the casting anyway. Who cast Scarlett Johansson and Elle Fanning together in a film can do little wrong with me, and Matt Damon is of course also a sympathetic guy who fits perfectly in these kinds of films. But the MVP is the endearing Maggie Elizabeth Jones as Damon's daughter. She steals every scene.

The story has enough drama in it and buying a zoo also provides enough humor, but Crowe doesn't wallow in melancholy and melodrama. It's also heartfelt and lifelike at times, and the down-to-earth approach does the film well. In the end, Crowe goes completely overboard again, but it is well deserved this time.

Every once in a while you just feel like a feel-good movie. One where you don't mind that it is full of clichés, and where you are not really challenged as a viewer. 'We Bought A Zoo' is one such movie. If you expect the above, then that is exactly what you get. Great snack and of course always +1 for Scarlett Johansson... ?

Too sweet American for me.

Maybe nice enough for a snack.

But I had already seen this > Our Zoo (2014); and that is qualitatively something different, although the story is very similar.
