setback. No idea what it was exactly, but I got - certainly not the first hour - but not in the film. It could be the sound that was mixed a bit in the background, the somewhat small projection in the cinema (where something wasn't quite right anyway with sometimes a strange light glow in the left of the screen) or simply that the film never gets under the skin. It all seemed more like a sluggish summary than a good chunk of cinema. Then the soundtrack may be very nice and a bit dreamy too, which makes it all seem quite original, it also all glided by without you noticing it. Except that sometimes certain numbers didn't seem to belong to the images at all, but were just randomly mounted underneath.

McConaughey does his best with a flabby tummy and constantly in such dirty white underpants on the screen, but rather plays a character. Then Keaton did better in The Founder, and so did Ramírez in this movie. As a result, his character never comes to life and at the end it does take its revenge when his psyche is zoomed in more, although that last hour is a bit better than the first. But even there could have been more if the intrigues tumble over each other, but as a whole it is still flat. All in all, a film with potential, but not enough of it. 2.5*.

Golden handle.

Entertaining film for which Matthew McConaughey didn't starve himself for once, but aimed for the opposite effect. He seems to have put on 20 kilos for this role and it shows. His hair also underwent a metamorphosis to resemble the real gold prospector Kenny Wells as much as possible. So a story based on truth, but a moan who pays attention to it. Gold is an easy looking drama that actually mixes an adventurous whiff in the successful blender. Historically substantiated or not, it is fun.

However, the reason why series are so popular these days has not only to do with the convenience of Netflix. It often turns out that one can bring much more depth to a spread out story, rather than to the measured length of a feature film. Somewhat logical. As interesting and entertaining as this 'rise & fall' passes the viewer - thanks to the bloated protagonist, who is clearly looking forward to it - it remains rather superficial. Maybe that's why the ending is a bit bland. Fortunately, the foregoing holds you sufficiently in its grip.

***½

“Blue skies, baby!”

Smooth film with a strong McConaughey. That is also Gold's problem, because outside Wells, the other characters get off very badly. Acosta, well played by Ramírez, is an interesting character but barely fleshed out. The twist at the end doesn't come out quite right. The film also has moments when it all goes down nicely, and some scenes could have been deleted. Fortunately, McConaughey keeps it all together nicely.
