Elizabethtown plot

"It's a heck of a place to find yourself"

Drew Baylor (Bloom) is a successful designer whose life changes dramatically in one day. He loses his job because he has designed a product that no one wants to buy and immediately after that he is told that his father has passed away. On a plane bound for Elizabethtown, his father's hometown where he died while visiting relatives, Drew meets Claire (Kirsten Dunst), a spirited and perpetually optimistic flight attendant. She decides that she is the woman who will - literally and figuratively - show Drew the way back home and teach him what it means to truly live and love.

Brought this one along and looked at it without expectations. At first I really felt like I was watching Jerry Maguire again, but soon the story changed.

I liked the middle part, only the last part (the road trip) was a bit less and took the pace out of the film a bit, although it was good in the end.

A lot of famous people and it was great to see Orlando in a different role. The rest of the cast did well too. The film also had some nice music.

I thought it was a bit of a special movie. A mix of slightly different genres: romance, comedy, drama. Still, the film lacked something to make it a real hit, perhaps a slightly too long running time.

Have seen (almost) everything from Crowe by now. The man who, of course, mainly puts his stamp on the music he uses in his films. Usually fine, also in this 'Elizabethtown'. I am definitely not a fan of Bloom, he is not so special here either. It is mainly Dunst who steals the show. Nice role. Nice storytelling, funny developments - sometimes a little more could have been done (especially Bloom and Dunst together), but all in all this just looks good. Great movie for once.

“I'm impossible to forget, but I'm hard to remember.”

Cameron Crowe films always have a certain charm about them, but with Elizabethtown the director overplays his hand. This is of course primarily due to the disastrous choice to cast Bloom as the protagonist, but the story does not really get off the ground either.

Bloom is supposed to play a suicidal person, but walks around like a happy chicken throughout the film. I would be too if I was approached by Dunst, but I don't think that's the point the film was trying to make. This Drew's (Bloom) family is just another wacky couple, none of which stays with them (well, Sarandon, of course, in a memorable scene). A plus is the beautiful atmosphere that Crowe always manages to evoke and the wonderful music. And Dunst plays a nice quirky character with the necessary flair.
