Airport plot

"The #1 novel of the year - now a motion picture!"

Airport director Mel Bakersfield's stress tolerance is put to the test when a Boeing blocks a crucial runway during a severe snowstorm. In addition, his wife continues to sit on his skin. That same night, his brother-in-law and chief pilot of the Boeing 707 leaves with his stewardess (and mistress) for Rome, where he hopes to enjoy his new love for a few days. That happiness turns out to be short-lived when it turns out that she is pregnant with him. And not only that, there is a man with a bomb on board the aircraft.

Although this belongs to the disaster genre, the emphasis is on the characters and the dialogues. It is an ensemble cast with different storylines that are woven together. Dean Martin and Burt Lancaster are both embroiled in a love triangle. The comedic side is provided by Helen Hayes, as the shrewd old man who keeps coming up with tricks to get on board as a blind passenger. The tension comes through the passenger with a bomb in his briefcase. It only explodes half an hour before the end. That part provides a climax, but the quality is mainly in the strong division of roles, the deepening of the characters and their mutual confrontations.

Watched again after years. Interesting that the film is still worth watching after so many years.

A guess that I knew the reviews weren't great, didn't expect much from it and didn't get much for it, but something more could have been done here.

The airport, the crowds, weather conditions, protocols and decision-making... Airport certainly has some nice things and I'm not even ready for the threatening situation that the film revolves around at the end. The cast is also quite decent with Lancaster in the typical role of the man with the big responsibilities and the tough decisions, Hudson and of course the always beautiful Bisset. As mentioned, the bad weather situation is interesting and the film gets especially better when there is shit in Hudson's plane. The old lady, the stowaway, is also quite funny.

But... ouch, the film slips horribly on all the characters and their private concerns. And there are quite a few, because practically everyone has relational problems that are explained. And how the film gets bogged down in endless chatter in that regard. It was criticism that I had already read before I saw the film and I can only underline this opinion. A disaster movie is almost out of the question amid marital quarrels, hesitation to choose another, and accidentally pregnant. And that's a shame, because something closer to the genre disaster film itself and the focus on the airport could have turned out better. It should be clear in that regard that this is below par.
