Alexis Zorbas plot

"Life. Lust. Love. Zorba."

An English writer inherits an abandoned mine from his Greek father in Crete. He heads there and meets Alexis Zorba, a somewhat crazy middle-aged Greek. The writer (Alan Bates) recruits Zorba (Anthony Quinn) to work for him. The ever cheerful Greek teaches the Englishman life lessons in the obstacle and misfortune-strewn existence on Crete.

Rarely has an actor been so identified with his character as Anthony Quinn with that of Alexis Zorbas. Although this black and white film has some pretty grim scenes, Quinn succeeds in giving the viewers a lasting good feeling. Thanks to this film and especially the music of Mikis Theodorakis, the sirtarki also became known worldwide. This film was nominated no less than seven times, but won only three Oscars, including the one for best supporting actress played by the Russian Lila Kedrova... 5*

Alexis Zorbas is mainly honored because of Anthony Quinn's top performance. But the film is more than that of course. It is the film that gives us a glimpse of Greece, made the Sirtaki famous, and also rightly won several awards as a film. I had expected a different film, more in the direction of Fiddler on the roof.

The film certainly has its memorable moments, but is not always equally strong. And it also gives a bleak image of Greece with the villagers who mainly appear in the picture with violence, murder and theft. Quinn is quite captivating as Zorba and the other actors also do well. I expected more iconic images and still blame the director partly for not having shown some things better. Now the film is mainly known for the music and Anthony Quinn's performance and not immediately as a film itself.

A classic that is subtly left aside, it seems... The sirtaki was invented especially for this film. There are better classics, because "Zorba" actually just meanders along for 140 minutes. The film is not boring, although there were some long scenes with that Madame Hortense, a lonely hotel owner who looks back on a past as a courtesan with many prominent lovers. Strange film, a bit exotic, a bit unbalanced above all and without a really coherent story, that mainly revolves around a cultural clash between different philosophies of life and traditions, which immediately also produces some heavily dramatic scenes that you do not immediately expect. I was impressed by Anthony Quinn's performance, perhaps one of the strongest of his career... that was the only thing. Small 3*
