A Nagy Füzet plot

Towards the end of World War II, people in major German cities were at the mercy of air raids and starvation. So a desperate young mother sends her 13-year-old twins to their grandmother's house in the countryside, despite the fact that this grandmother is a cruel and brutal alcoholic. The villagers call her "the witch" because she is said to have once rumored that she poisoned her husband a long time ago. Formerly spoiled, the twins must now learn to survive all alone in their new, rural environment.

A powerful film from Hungary about 13-year-old twins who quickly become adults. This after the violent events towards the end of the Second World War.

Director János Szász won a total of 5 awards, and was nominated once.

3.5 *

Bad film, bad experiences of two teenage boys who, under pressure from the war and living conditions, will undergo a metamorphosis that, partly due to their own imposed discipline, will not exactly lead them to human dignity
It is rough and raw, but it is strangely strong with many resolutely suggestive scenes, excellent construction, without frills, camera work with a lot of attention to the inscrutable faces of the two boys and... it continues to amaze and captivate until the end.

Beautiful film, which I watched with bated breath. Yes, perhaps a bit raw, but that was also the time. It was about survival or death. We can hardly imagine that now. But all the characters have nuances and shades of grey. That also applies to the grandmother, and the desperate actions of the mother. Hungarian films can sometimes come across as 'closed' or not very accessible. This one too. That also has to do with the Hungarian national character, which tends towards isolationism. You can also see that in the politics of Hungary at this time. A difficult to understand country and people.
