Impressive German war drama from the director of the great miniseries Unsere Mutter, Unsere Vater. That level is just not reached, but that does not alter the fact that this has become a particularly compelling, intense and gripping film. Excellently played and convincingly designed too.

Pretty good movie. In a fairly realistic way, the film gives an insight into life in the Buchenwald concentration camp. At times the film is quite intense and some moments hit hard. The most interesting aspect of the film is the focus on the lives of the prisoners in the camp and the tensions between them. The acting of the cast is pretty good. Especially Sabin Tambrea as the SS commander made an impression.

I have some mixed feelings about the storyline of the three-year-old boy. On the one hand, it's nice to see that humanity can be found in a terrible place like Buchenwald. On the other hand, this storyline also came across a bit unbelievable. The SS search for the boy was a bit amateurish.

3.5*

A fairly strong Holocaust film without being outstanding. A Holocaust film without horror is like a pub without beer. Here the explicit horror is quite limited, but it is still tangible how sadistic and degrading things were in Buchenwald. Executions are not shown at close range. The hammer incident is a small exception to this. The torture scenes leave nothing to the imagination anyway. The screams and howls go through marrow and bone.

No idea if the boy's story actually happened or is fictional. I found the plot to be a bit odd at times. At times the SS realized only too well that they were being lied to (eg during the betrayal). Their actions were subsequently insufficiently proportionate to their reputation. The spotlight scene was also highly bizarre , leaving the boy so sought-after untouched.

Nice change also with real images of the American army. Like a ticking time bomb, they came closer and closer. In every Holocaust film, the persistence and will to survive of the camp inmates is striking. Despite all the horror, hunger, cold and pain, people continue to make it to the next day. Not the very best movie (though that's relative), but definitely recommended and still very good. Reminds me a bit of “The boy in the striped pyjamas” with the hidden child.
