I had a great time with this movie.

I didn't find it tedious at all and the alienating atmosphere kept me captivated until the end.

I often come to Arab countries for my work and the atmosphere, the helplessness and the situations that can arise because of the culture gap were portrayed here in a very recognizable way.

It didn't surprise me when I saw that the film is based on a book. As a film, the script goes in all directions and it is unclear what they want with the story. The start is quite nice; the setting is beautiful and the story is built up slowly. Then things go wrong and it is unclear what they want. Storylines are rushed and others, less interesting, suddenly get all the attention. The movie seems to end a few times but then continues for a while and then ends haphazardly.

Watched purely and solely for the sake of Tom Hanks. The fact that this is one of the few movies I haven't seen by Hanks says a lot. And this proved to be the case, because I found this to be a fairly mediocre, uninspired film with little to it. A film in which Hanks is sent from pillar to post in Saudi Arabia because the king has better things to do than listen to his PowerPoint presentation.

Tom Hanks usually does a decent job in his movies, but the rest isn't much. The stereotypes and prejudices about the differences between West and East are thrown at you. And the ensuing romance made me curl up on my toes.

Shame, because I was looking forward to it. One to quickly forget.
