Very nice images of the real Elvis.

Very beautiful music and especially well sung live.

That Elvis had a good sense of humor too.

4 stars

Great Documentary / Music film about the legendary Elvis Presley. This documentary shows once again that Elvis was a perfect entertainer besides his musical talent and why many women fell for him. The documentary is beautifully filmed and you can also regularly (smile) laugh at Elvis and his antics. In terms of music it was of course also enjoyable for the fans, which I am not one of (I do like his music). This Documentary / Music film is also regularly broadcast on TCM and that is where I saw it.

There are several versions of this documentary in circulation. There is the original film from 1970 and then there is also the 'update' from 2001 under the impetus of Turner Classic Movies. In this last version a number of talking heads were eliminated in favor of more footage of Elvis & band in which we see him rehearsing or performing in concert. The 2001 version contains 12 minutes less playing time but still more performances by Elvis. It is this version that I watched. The 'interludes without music' are effectively reduced to a minimum here and instead we get nice moments in the studio with the TCB band and of course a lot of music on stage in Las Vegas. Our man also has an enormous charisma when you see him doing this. The world is (once again) at his feet and at the time of this documentary the Vegas performances still feel fresh. Because of the success, Elvis' manager would stick to the live formula until it became deadly boring for Elvis, as was also the case with his film contract. But here we see him still quite fresh and lively, and physically in very good shape. As the title indicates, it is a break with his previous films. No more scripts but Elvis as he is. And that is, besides the music, a lot of jokes that we get to see. We learn nothing about his personal side. This is about Elvis the performer. For me, that is enough.
