De Heineken Ontvoering plot

The Heineken Kidnapping is inspired by the most famous kidnapping case in the Netherlands. The beer magnate Alfred Heineken is kidnapped in 1983 together with his driver Ab Doderer by four men, who demand 35 million guilders in ransom. Four young, money-hungry criminals who have known each other since childhood and who form a close clan, lock up Heineken and Doderer in a shed in Amsterdam for two weeks.

Nice, but really could (should) be better. The story itself is, of course, great and excellent material for a crime thriller, with a bit of psychological drama. I don't find it very interesting that the film here and there deviates from reality. After all, you don't know exactly how things went if you weren't there yourself. The broad outlines are correct and that is the most important.

Still, the script is flawed here and there. Sloppy writing, lines that don't matter that get too much attention or certain elements (such as on St. Maarten) that fly out of control. The acting is also not always consistent. Hauer has seen better, but the crooks are also too many caricatures now and then. The best example of this is Teun Kuilboer's feigning mental insanity.

It is true that the case itself is so interesting, precisely because of the many aspects before, during and after the kidnapping. I have to say that I didn't know a lot of things either (didn't read the book). At certain moments, the film also convinces. Perhaps there were better directors imaginable. One with balls. The fact that you are intimidated by someone who is in prison may also say enough.

3 stars.

This actually starts out as a very entertaining thriller. The run-up to the kidnapping, the kidnapping itself and the imprisonment know how to captivate and are (largely) credibly portrayed. It's a shame that that credibility seems to have completely disappeared in the second half. The ridiculous piece on Sint Maarten takes the cake and is not only reminiscent of Bassie and Adriaan because of the location. There I was completely taken out of the movie and started watching the clock. Also the forced confrontation at the end, partly because the credibility is already gone, didn't quite come through. Ultimately, the film has to rely mainly on the acting. Rutger Hauer plays his part convincingly, but Reinout Scholten van Aschat, Gijs Naber and Teun Kuilboer also do well. Also a compliment for the decoration, because the era of the 80s comes into its own. However, these factors and the good start cannot prevent that I was left with a somewhat unsatisfactory feeling at the end and that after a few weeks I have already forgotten the film for the most part.

2.5*

Partly fictional reconstruction of the then notorious kidnapping case. A rather weak story that forgets to get exciting. The part that plays in Guadeloupe or Sint Maarten is cringe-inducing. Spicy that the kidnappers are called by name with the exception of Willem Holleeder.
