Very exciting film with strong acting. Cruise comes across as a ruthless killer very convincingly in the film, but the show is stolen by Jamie Foxx, who I love as the sympathetic and somewhat insecure taxi driver Max. Also nicely elaborated in the film is how Max gradually gets more and more self-confidence. Most of the movie takes place at night. This produces some very nice images. I think the camera work is quite strong. I think the music is a bit standard and not really special, but I can deal with it in itself.

4.0 *

“I can't drive you around while you're killing folks. It ain't my job!”

“Tonight it is.”

Great action thriller. Collateral is a film by a Michael Mann in top form. The beautiful images of Los Angeles at night, the wonderful dialogues between Vincent and Max, and Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, who deliver a fine acting performance. Many scenes take place in the small space of a taxi, and the tension between Vincent and Max is constantly palpable.

Cruise can enjoy himself as a hit man, and Foxx offers clever counterplay. Foxx has the more difficult role but plays the modest Max, who is increasingly resisting Vincent, very cleverly. Everything eventually comes together in an unparalleled way in the nightclub scene. A great build-up with all the characters who make their way to the nightclub continues in the nightclub, resulting in unprecedented tension and hard-hitting action. The score/music is great and atmospheric, and really added value in some scenes. The ending is a bit of coincidence, and an experienced hit man like Vincent is often tricked by the inexperienced taxi driver Max. But the brilliant cinematography, acting and tension make up for a lot. Collateral is the textbook example of a thriller that doesn't need much to be nail-biting suspense.
