The film seems to tell a standard story about criminals who steal money and get the mafia after them. However, the story is put together more intelligently with Varrick, cleverly played by Matthau, who has his own plans. This ultimately leads to a spectacular and cleverly conceived climax. However, the fact that he ended up in bed with that girl, and we see that more often in films from that time, is downright ridiculous..

Strong and original story about a bank robbery gone wrong. A robbery that also yields a remarkable amount of money, much more than the gang had calculated in advance.

The film was a commercial flop, partly because lead actor Walter Matthau criticized the film in almost every interview. Nevertheless, this is one of the best roles of his career as an actor.

Also a strong performance by Joe Don Baker in his role as a hitman who has to retrieve the large amount of (black) money on behalf of the mafia.

The script is well written with believable characters. There are some moments that you think are a bit cumbersome - the bomb exploding in Vernon's face - but it does provide a spectacle. And that is also part of film, of course. The leading roles Walter Mathau and the menacing John Vernon play a game that may also have inspired the Coen Brothers in their films.

This is simply very good seventies cinema, a neo noir with all the trimmings. A production by Don Siegel and he knows how to handle it. The name Clint Eastwood is mentioned at one point in the film and is a nice nod to the Dirty Harrycollaboration.

The music is by Lalo Schifrin and it is that typical funky stuff that was in at the time. That takes you completely into the 1970s. Lalo Schifrin was a top composer who also scored the Dirty Harry films.
