Animal Kingdom plot

"A crime story"

After the death of his mother, 17-year-old Joshua is taken in by his grandmother Janine 'Smurf' Cody and her three criminal sons. Eldest son Andrew 'Pope' Cody, a bank robber with no conscience, is in hiding from a group of dirty cops. His brother Craig is a successful but insane drug dealer and Darren, the youngest member of the Cody family, can do nothing but naively follow his eldest brother. Just as Pope's business partner and best friend Barry decides to step out of the criminal world, a brutal murder causes tensions between the police and the Cody family to erupt. However, Joshua, trying to stay on the straight and narrow amid the violence, soon acts as a pawn between his family and Homicide Detective Leckie.

I was completely blown away by this crime film and was glued to the tube every minute. In fact, it is not a crime film but a film about a crime family. Or actually not a film about a crime family but a film about the only member of the family who is not a criminal but who is thrown into misery by his criminal family. A blood-curdling tragedy with an unexpected redemption.

“It's a crazy fucking world.”

Raw Australian crime film. Animal Kingdom calmly builds up the suspense under the skin, and anyone expecting a Scarface reincarnation will find themselves in a rut. Atmospheric, calm, and with some explosions of violence, Animal Kingdom shows that the police and the criminals mostly revolve around each other, and it shows that there is one big gray area. There's no justification or a happy ending here (see the way Joel Edgerton is killed). The fantastic final scenes show violence swallowing everyone, and the hug between Frecheville and Weaver [ /spoiler] feels like an ice cold shower.

Slow film in which my peanut butter version stands out mainly because of the enormous unrealistic dynamics between dialogue and the music. My wish that the copies give me the opportunity to bring things in better balance by means of multi-track technique will probably not be fulfilled. The music could have easily been 15 dB less.

The film doesn't really get going, although the plot allows for that.

Maybe I'm too impatient after 35 minutes, partly because the acting is mediocre.

The Australians can make a good film, this was not my cup of tea.
