Pretty nice.

A film that mainly relies on the dry effect. A madman is released from prison, but is already planning murders the same day. Rather than dialogue, there are a lot of voiceovers that provide commentary on the events. A separate approach, but it gives the film a clear face.

Furthermore, it is especially visually striking, although it is mainly in the first part of the film. Then Kargl starts repeating his tricks a little too much. It is also only the camera work that looks reasonably inventive, otherwise the film looks rather bare and ugly. Realism can look just a little bit better as far as I'm concerned.

The cold narration in contrast to the brutal murders keep this film interesting. Fortunately it doesn't take too long, towards the end the stretch is also a bit out and Leder doesn't come across as a murderer very credible, but that special atmosphere makes up for a lot.

Nice to have seen, the influence on later films is clear, but it still lacks something to be really good. Either it could all have been just a bit more refined, or just a bit more crazy, but now it sometimes falls a bit dead between the two.

Excellent film about a murderer who cannot resist his urge to kill after being released from prison. A strong start as a portrait about a psychopathic killer. The whole part of the house, though brutal, was a little less intrusive. Uncompromising and the camera work with almost constantly unusual angles gives the film its own identity.

Finally seen during a night of watching cult movies with Niethie. Without subtitles, but luckily I can understand German (while I can't speak it)

I already knew from the trailer that the film was ahead of its time. The camera work (following the face of that certain psycho) and editing caught my eye first. So we're tracking a... yeah, what can you call it?... who's just been released from an institution. His inner voice is what sustains him. He no longer has a roof and he constantly fights his impulses. He thinks he has finally found something; a big house. But once it seems to be inhabited by a demented man, a grandmother and a granddaughter, chaos breaks out.

Remarkably, I find it seems that this man is constantly trying to hold himself back as he plays his games on these selected victims. But that he just can't beat his impulses. You could almost say he's something animal. Despite the fact that the story is as thin as a beer mat, the undertone is quite strong in confrontational. The editing and the inner voice almost make you think that you are there yourself and the fact that this man is increasingly cutting his own fingers also makes the film more oppressive. The gray provincial atmosphere also completes the picture. No neon-lit city background this time.

Noé also said several times that he was inspired by this film.
