The seventies were the time when a shocking film regularly appeared and “The Devils” can without a doubt count itself among that group. However, shocking does not automatically equal good, because I personally didn't like this.

The story is quite messy and the scenes that pass by are rather isolated. All the weird, bizarre moments have already been named by others. It's all meant seriously, but sometimes it all looks like a parody. The big problem, however, is that it is very ugly cinema at first. Visually it's not pretty, but it's probably not intended for that either. Secondly, it is all very annoying to look at. I couldn't really laugh at the naked nuns, the dead crocodile and all the other nonsense that passed by. The only nice thing is that the Roman Catholic Church is being taken down again, but I know films in which this is done in a much better and, above all, more fun way.

Not my movie this. Trying something like that is certainly admirable, but I can find few positive elements in it.

1.5*

I almost knew it beforehand, but the high score convinced me to put it on. Religious horrors, or more drama even in this case, are not my cup of tea. The first hour is mainly a huge raving about God and other Biblical nonsense that is told with expensive words. What was going on in the background between the bigwigs of the town was also uninteresting.

The role of Oliver Reed as a sinning priest is still reasonable. Quite a bit of nudity, although it's not really pretty. A nice scene was in which the nuns turned into sex-hungry maniacs and dishonored various church materials. But the feeling that prevailed was an irritating, overcrowded chicken coop with an incompetent marching band in the background to provide accompanying music. Sometimes so over the top that it looked like a parody.

The last half hour actually gets a bit better, although it is full of annoying characters. You do feel a little sorry for Grandier, after all he just behaves like a human being. I also believe that it is true, because then people were just as crazy as they are now. Banned in several countries at the time because of the controversy, which is certainly understandable. But in the present time it is no longer shocking and what remains is just a boring, nasty, long-winded film.

A historical drama that reflects the horror of that time. Power games in which an ideology/religion is used to literally silence dissent. And this preceded by untold suffering. I can imagine that the Catholic Church was not happy with this film. But it's just one of the many black pages in its history. Masterfully portrayed by Ken Russell and his DoP. Davies' score on the coarser scenes sounds like bad trip psychedelics. Subject to the fashion of the early seventies, but still very appropriate. Oliver Reed shines as the priest who, in addition to his 'sins', is also a man of reason. The rest of the cast - both possessed and inquisitors - excel in convincing religious madness. This is a kind of 'visual' history that you don't learn at school. Ultimately, behind all those gruesome witch hunts, there were people of flesh and blood.
