Thomas Est Amoureux plot

Thomas is thirty-two years old and has suffered from acute agoraphobia for some time. He hasn't left his house for eight years, and he doesn't let anyone in. His only contact with the outside world is the computer, which establishes an image and sound connection with the rest of the world. The insurance company takes care of almost every aspect of Thomas's life, from repairing his vacuum cleaner robot to his mental well-being. Thomas is almost happy with this strange hermit life. On his computer he has Clara, a busty cyber girlfriend, but he is getting tired of that. Then his insurance company reports that he qualifies for the services of prostitutes who are specially trained to care for the mentally handicapped. At the same time, he is signed up by his psychiatrist to an internet dating club. All kinds of 'real' women report on his screen. But Thomas just wants to be left alone.

Nice idea.

Also worked out funny. Too bad the decors look too cheap and too "cyberworld in a movie". This often gives the movie a rather stupid look.

But otherwise I thought the idea was funny. You follow a main character who you don't see the whole film, only hear (complaining and whining). In terms of color use the film was still very ordinary, but there are not many cinematic strengths.

I could smile about it. Something different, nice variation, but just a little too cheap in general to be really good. 3*

Nice film about a man who hasn't left his apartment for years. An original idea where we don't see the main character (only his voice and the screen he's looking at). The story lacks a bit of direction and remains too superficial to be captivating. Certainly at the beginning a number of entertaining scenes.

Quite nice Belgian sf that doesn't go beyond computer screens. And that for a film from 2000.

Thomas is a man who has locked himself in his apartment for eight years and steadfastly refuses to go outside. Fortunately, Social Media seems to have gone much further in this world than it does today; which allows him to make many contacts with just a few snaps of his fingers. The washing machine man, his mother, a psychologist, a crush and eventually also the escort Eva. Which he sees right through and where attempts still seem to have to be made to really go outside.

It's a nice watch and you can see the indoor and outdoor locations on the screen. You don't get to see Thomas himself. At most his shadow at the end, when he decides to go outside.

It is a combination of quite interesting interactions, without it getting boring quickly. A small film that is great to watch.

3.5*
