"Laugh. Cry. Share the pants."

Four best friends are separated from each other and on their last day of shopping together they find a pair of jeans that fit each one of them perfectly. They decide to use these "magic" pants as a kind of binding agent for the months they don't see each other, by having a different person wear the pants every week. Despite the fact that this is really a film for young women, I also had a pretty good time with this Comedy / Drama (enough to smile) and that is mainly due to the nice story which revolves around the football-playing Bridget (nicely played by the young boy at the time). Blake Lively and then it was clear that she would grow into a beautiful woman) and the beautiful story about the cynical Tibby (played creditably by Amber Tamblyn) who has a hobby of filming. That story is actually very beautiful and also quite moving (I even got wet eyes) and that is due to the strong role of very young Jenna Boyd who is a very positive (stimulates others who are excited and happy by her) young girl named Bailey, who unfortunately suffers from leukemia. The scene in the hospital in particular was quite emotional and moving.

I found the other two stories less interesting, although the story about Lena (played meritoriously by Alexis Bledel) is visually beautiful and that's because that story takes place on a beautiful Greek island, which regularly produces beautiful images. The story itself was bland and clichéd. The latter also applies more or less to the story which revolves around daughter Carmen (portrayed by America Ferrera), who feels abandoned and ignored by her father Al (played by Bradley Whitford) who is soon to be married to another woman. who also has a daughter. Here and there that story is a bit moving, especially the moment she calls her father and opens her heart.

All in all, just an entertaining Comedy/Drama, whose story every four friends is nicely put together and which is even touching at times. The actresses who play the roles of the four friends all do it nicely and deservingly, but they are outplayed by the very young Jenna Boyd.

ugh.

It's not exactly a surprise that I don't really belong to the target audience for this film, although you can't just use the same brush for teenage drama. This film also had a pretty decent score, so I gave it a try anyway. Better not have done it.

Story felt like it was some wild fantasy of a lonely 12-year-old who dreams of what it would be like to have three amazing girlfriends at 16. It's uninspired American kitsch of the highest order. Four different characters (oh what a nice cross section) who whiz through a lot of moral lessons while some idiot story about pants has to tie everything together.

Characters are as flat as can be, acting isn't exactly great, I think the audiovisual department was on holiday and the 2 cycles (first everything goes wrong, then everything goes right) makes the last half hour extra irritating. Only the Greek scenes bring a somewhat summery feeling, if only because of the location.

That's the only positive thing about this whole movie. I'll keep the second part for when I've finally become too senile to remember this part.

1.0*

“Wear them. They'll make you brave.”

Nice film about four girlfriends and magical jeans. I'm not the target audience, but I still had a great time. The beginning is still light and funny but the story takes more and more dramatic turns.

The four friends have a hard time and learn what it means to grow up. That's the moral of the story, and it's worked out pretty well in itself. You can already see here that Blake Lively is a star in the making and Ferrera and Tamblyn (who has by far the most interesting storyline) are also good. Bledel and her storyline in Greece is a bit boring but the images are beautiful. Except for the storyline around the girl who befriends Tamblyn (played very strongly by the young Boyd), it doesn't go very deep and especially beautiful, blond Blake gets over her grief very quickly. The ending is sweet, but that's to be expected with this kind of movie.
