Brian alternately rents out his apartment to Ellen, who has an unhappy marriage and wants a painting spot, and Sam, who has just been dumped by his girlfriend Pastel. This all goes well until Sam and Brian decide to switch dates without telling Ellen. Ellen, meanwhile, has some sort of indirect communication with Sam. This all ends in misunderstanding.

Did you know that Robert De Niro has his own production house? TriBeCa Pictures. His intention was to make New York attractive again as a production location. Indeed, the early 1990s are marked by a renewed interest in New York local color and lifestyle. One of TriBeCa Pictures' first productions was "The Night We Never Met" - a mercilessly forgotten comedy that recouped only a fraction of its budget. Talk about a false start, Bobby!

However, this movie deserves better. It is a charming, pleasantly portrayed morality comedy with a premise that you could almost call Rohmer-light. Ha, the mischief of yuppies, precarious housing and the capricious lovemaking! "Love is like politics, the incumbent always has an advantage." The intrigue is set in a moody setting, the picturesque streets of... Tribeca. No kidding, it was actually in the Village, but that's pretty much the same thing isn't it?

Director Warren Leight remains an enigma: the poor man has only directed one film and nevertheless showed a distinct signature in this The Night We Never Met. One of the unmistakable New York schtick: "A club soda stain on your shirt? Quickly grab some red wine, it will wash that club soda right off!" Admittedly it's all a bit hit and miss, some attempts at burlesque humor are rather embarrassing, the nadir being Jeanne Tripplehorn's fake French cackling.

However, because of the appearance of Annabella Sciorra extremely watchable. Every frame she walks has a magical glow, a natural chiaroscuro effect, like a girl from Caravaggio.
