A bit of an awkward mix of comedy and drama, although that may also be the intention of the film. In any case, Jack Black is perfectly cast in the lead role as a former nerd who wants to make a splash at the upcoming reunion by arranging the arrival of James Marsden, the coolest guy at school at the time. To achieve this he is willing to go very far. Occasionally the film is very funny, not least because of the dynamic between Black and Marsden, but certain scenes and underlying themes feel a bit forced, making the film quite unbalanced.

Jack Black in a comedy. That's not possible. This man is so bad at acting that Black's behavior just becomes annoying. We now know Black's nerve-wracking traits. The story does not really know how to choose a side, it is predictable and all clichés are pulled out of the closet. Incredible movie. This one gets 1 star from me for the effort.

A big surprise. This movie is not just a comedy indeed. There are some pretty serious themes involved. I really appreciated this. For me this was a pleasant surprise. But there will be quite a few people who will be shocked and uncomfortable if all they expect is a Jack Black comedy.

Is this perhaps a new kind of genre? Here on moviemeter the film is only labeled Comedy, and I have the feeling that the label Comedy/Drama does not fit. Although it is a dramatic black comedy, it remains light-hearted. Also ends on a light note.
