Quite enjoyed this typical 80s teen comedy.

Sean Penn puts the perfect version of a California surfer dude here, really funny.

Furthermore, a nice, light story and you get the tits just like that (back then that was still possible without fuss).

3.5 stars

Excellent film about a number of students from California. This teen comedy/high school movie is definitely a trendsetting film. Entertaining characters and fun dialogues. There is also plenty to laugh about (especially the scenes with Sean Penn). A fine soundtrack and in retrospect the cast can be called special. In the review vote raised to a narrow 4.0 stars for this directorial debut from Amy Heckerling.

The script for the film comes from Cameron Crowe. The film follows a few characters during their senior year of high school. Crowe never experienced that magical school year that the average American teenager perceives as an exciting experience. At least not as a student. A loss. To be able to experience the magical feeling, he nestled undercover among students at a high school and wrote a book about it. He based his script on that book. The film, directed by Amy Heckerling, whose name doesn't immediately ring a bell, gives a beautiful episodic atmosphere of a senior year in the early 1980s.

The film is populated by apparently stereotypical characters. Each one is given a clichéd form, but underneath that superficial layer there is indeed a certain deeper emotional layer. Their problems, needs and motivations are treated seriously without compromising the light-hearted nature of the film. A nice balance. It lends realness to the characters and is good for the experience. Quite clever how the film sometimes lets the characters break free from their superficial characterization.

The film marked the breakthrough of some of today's big names. Nice to see actors like Sean Penn and Forest Whitaker in playful immature roles in this sympathetic coming of age film. A film that presents its characters sometimes very comically, sometimes with drama, but always empathetic and tangible. Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a pleasant movie.
