There is currently no one who can play the weak crybaby as well as Will Ferrell, although that can sometimes get on your nerves. Ferrell once again takes on the role of Brad Whitaker, who seems to be sharing his duties as a father/stepfather with Dusty Mayron [Mark Wahlberg] since the end of the first film. But when one of the children publicly declares during a Christmas recital that she would like a 'normal' Christmas with the whole family, both fathers feel guilty and decide to take a chance. But that does mean that difficult decisions have to be made. Moreover, the suddenly announced arrival of Dusty's thick-wood-saws-men-boards father [Mel Gibson] does not make things any easier.

Ferrell and John Lithgow [as his father] go a little too far with their idiotic characters at times, Gibson plays his role as Mel Gibson properly, but it's Wahlberg who holds the film together here with a rendition that is firmly rooted in reality. as well as Linda Cardellini as Brad's troubled wife. The plot is a bit thin, but the various activities the families undertake often made me smile and often laugh out loud, which certainly makes me forgive... and almost forget about the modest shortcomings of this unpretentious Christmas movie!

A mix of Meet the Fockers and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

Part 2 is just like part 1 a clichéd feel-good film. Is that bad? No, once in a while such a movie is just fine to watch, provided there is a good cast. Apart from the children and the women, the fathers and grandfathers were the only ones who kept the film afloat. Will Ferrell simply remains one of my favorites in this comedy genre.

A sequel that is completely in line with the first part in terms of quality. Nowhere high-quality or even good, but an hour and a half of simple feelgood entertainment. The humor is still mostly bland, but maybe a tad less well-behaved this time. This is mainly due to the presence of the deliciously incorrect and crude Mel Gibson, although even he is kept in check. A bit of a shame, because with the acting talent that was collected here, you could have made a somewhat more mature and funnier comedy. Will Ferrell wasn't doing very well, and was even a bit overshadowed by the other actors. Nota bene Mark Wahlberg I even liked and played better with the rest of the cast in this sequel. The ultimate low point is the joint singing of the Christmas carol at the end; how cringe can you make it say. But in general, just like part 1, it was still quite enjoyable mindless viewing. Good? No, but nothing annoying either. 2.5*.
