The trailer is a lot flashier than the movie itself. Bardo has certainly not become Iñárritu's best film. But there are enough WTF moments to captivate the viewer. Bardo is the story of an award-winning Mexican filmmaker and journalist struggling between his Mexican roots and American recognition for his work. We see him struggle with those thoughts in a story that is intertwined with the necessary fantasy moments. They are quite bizarre at times. Unfortunately, the rhythm of the film is not really right and the whole seems to move forward in fits and starts. Too bad, because I think there was much more potential in this, especially if you see a film like Babel or Birdman.

An Inarritu indeed appeals to the imagination with its impressive films. So expectations were high for this Bardo, but were treated with some caution when I received the disappointing comments. And it must indeed be said, by far the least of his oeuvre, also for me.

In terms of editing and cinematographically strong. At times visually a gem of surrealistic and even optical illusion, he tries to enchant the viewer. But that's about it. Poetic and artistic all. Too maybe, because it was more of a mess for me.

Mainly content. I couldn't do much with that. And then it will be a long sitting of course. It is indeed nice that Netflix does not always want to go on the blockbuster tour. Nice that there is something like this every year as in the past È Stata la Mano di Dio (Film, 2021), Roma (Film, 2018) or Mank (Film, 2020)

A tall human shadow in a desert jumps extremely high and far. A doctor concludes that a newborn baby did not want to be born at all and puts it back in the mother's womb. Father and mother walk through the hospital and realize that the umbilical cord has not been cut, whereupon father cuts the umbilical cord halfway. If you're intrigued after that prologue, then this film is made for you, but chances are you're holding your breath for what else you're going to get. I emphatically belong to the latter category and my suspicions were confirmed in this completely absurd, tired reflection on life and everything that has to do with it. I believe. It is a succession of visual feats in which cameraman Darius Khondji, production designer Eugenio Caballero, arts director Carlos Y. Jacques and costume designer Anna Terrazas have been given all the space they need to demonstrate their considerable craftsmanship. But because it all makes no sense, it is especially extremely tiring. A dazzling pile of hot air.
