uh.

The film has a rather special concept. However, despite the nice idea, the execution is just within the typical American lines. You can expect that again, so my expectations were not so high.

However, the film is still a bit annoying at times. The film has an original character, but then it is still too predictable. Also, the humor never really works. Efron gives a strong youth content to the film while he clearly focuses more on adults. At least I assume.

Efron does a fine job, but also just stays within the lines of what he has to do. He got a lot better later on, but for now he's doing okay. The best comedy moments came from Lennon, although he sometimes goes a bit too far.

Some jokes are also stretched a bit too long or are just not that fun. The film is never really hilarious and never fully captivating. Usually these kind of high-school settings give a smooth atmosphere, but this one still manages to be boring every now and then.

A film that doesn't do anything new, but is somehow entertaining and nevertheless still touches a few shelves. Efron does end up carrying the film, and Lennon is quite nice. For the rest it is a missed opportunity.

In '89 nobody had heard of Vanilla Ice, let alone Harry Potter. There are more of these stupid mistakes in this 'comedy'. That one guy doesn't even recognize his own guy, for example. A lot of basketball, because in America you are not really 'the man' until you are asked to join the basketball team. That obsession Americans have with performing, being the best at everything. Well, at least this was some serious shit. I still thank God every day on my bare knees that I was not born in America, but in Europe.

Zac Efron is of course another self-righteous character. That guy was not lifted over the horse, but over a complete equestrian center. His sermon continues: "If you girls don't respect yourself, how can you expect others to?"

Very lame gay jokes too, comparing someone with Boy George .. Efron to that blond bully Draco Malfoy: "Under all that macho behavior hides an insecure girl who wants to come out."

Small roll for Avril Lavigne, I saw.

A romcom with a moral message that we know from A Christmas Carol, but without the ghosts. A light-hearted film with the necessary charm, but otherwise predictable and not really strong characters. It all looks nice, but it does follow the formula very hard. It never gets bad, but it doesn't get above average either.
