In May 2020, the murder of George Floyd by a white police officer provided a huge boost to the “Black Lives Matter” movement in the United States. Sixty-five years earlier, in the summer of 1955, the gruesome slaughter of a 14-year-old boy in Mississippi had the same effect on the then Civil Rights Movement.

This film mainly focuses on the role played by an intensely sad, but determined mother. It is a true tour-de-force from Danielle Deadwyler, who cleverly manages to bring all emotions to the fore. In my eyes an impressive Oscar-worthy performance in a film that will reverberate for a long time.

Nice drama. The story is unfortunately true. The effect is reasonable, but something is missing. What can not be fully explained. The story is full of emotion, anger, sadness and frustration, but it still fails to fill the viewer. Certain scenes are, but the court case in particular is very predictable. Although it probably went that way, some extra Hollywood sauce could have been added to this. Furthermore, the film contains some boring moments, but nevertheless never gets boring. The acting is fine. Visually everything looks very good with a great '50s atmosphere. 3.0/3.5

Reconstruction of the events that led Mamie Till—Mobley [Danielle Deadwyler] to become one of the most important figures in the NAACP. In 1955, Mamie lets her 14-year-old and childishly naive son Emmett [Jalyn Hall] vacation with relatives in Mississippi. Emmett grew up in (relatively) liberal Chicago and is hardly aware of any racism, as is evident when he tells the white shop owner [Haley Bennett] that she looks like a movie star and also whistles after her. With a little basic knowledge of America, it should come as no surprise what happens next. Chukwu wastes far too much time on Mamie's wailing and complaining, clearly has little interest in the mock trial that follows, and then has no time left to talk about Mamie's activism (we should read that after the final scene). She apparently found it more relevant to choose the right costumes, the perfect make-up and suitable wallpaper. A relevant story reduced to a trite, superficial and therefore disappointing drama.
