The Disaster Artist plot

"I did naaaht! Oh, hi Mark"

True story about the making of the movie 'The Room', the cult classic described as the 'Citizen Kane' of bad movies. Two outsiders decide to pursue their dream. When the world rejects them, they decide to make their own movie. The film ultimately turns out to be terribly bad due to unintended hilarious moments, an inimitable plot and terrible acting.

Of all the movies of 2017, I was looking forward to this one the most. Greg Sestero's book is very witty and gives a fantastic picture of crazy Tommy Wiseau and what it must have been like on the set of the infamously bad movie The Room.

The result is a handsome comedy with a few effective touches of drama. This could very easily have turned into a bland, overblown SNL skit with a smug James Franco. Fortunately, The Disaster Artist is much more than that. It takes some getting used to, but in the long run you will lose Franco and you will only see Wiseau, very strong. Brother Dave also plays a very nice role as Sestero and a handful of comedians play small supporting roles, but don't really stand out. Seth Rogen even thought he played an excellent part. The film sometimes feels a bit short-sighted to keep it simple and skips several interesting aspects of the story. At the same time, there is a lot of detail in the look; I thought several times that I was looking at images from The Room instead of re-enacted scenes, very well done. But above all, The Disaster Artist is hugely amusing. Just like The Room, which yields a great double bill. Kind of like Troll 2 and Best Worst Movie.

4 stars.

Have a mixed feeling about this. The Disaster Artist is a very entertaining film, especially by James Franco, who plays a hilarious Tommy Wiseau. It is also a film that unfortunately remains very superficial. The biggest laughs are simply re-enacted scenes from The Room. But my biggest problem is that the movie is too nice for Wiseau. In the film, Tommy comes across as a sympathetic outsider chasing his dreams, with virtually no attention being paid to his behavior and his deep-seated misogyny (something that permeates The Room as well). Ultimately, The Disaster Artist seems to be mostly an ode to a rich bastard who made a monstrosity, and I feel a bit uncomfortable about that.

Really nice movie. Dave Franco plays the best part in my opinion as Greg, but James is also good as the weirdest guy ever, Tommy Wiseau. It has since been leaked that he is a Pole, but how old he is and how he got that 6 million is still a mystery.

Sometimes really funny but also moving and especially when the tension between Tommy and Greg rises. You also get a good idea of what kind of disaster the recordings were at times. Never a dull moment.

Soundtrack: wonderful, especially in the beginning you hear a lot of early 90s dance classics, not quite right with 1998 in my opinion, but the makers just thought it fit the feeling. Also featuring the best song ever *ahum*, Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley, to scream when they sing it along!

Keep listening to the credits when Rhythm of the Night is put on, you will hear Franco sing along at one point, hilarious.

After the credits you see another ironic scene between James Franco and the real Wiseau. All in all, the film is a party, made with visible pleasure. Quote from an article about the film:

James Franco's The Disaster Artist has earned high marks (and hi, Marks) LOLz!
