Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot plot

'Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot' follows John Callahan, a cartoonist who is severely disabled after a car accident. After the accident, he uses his drawings as therapy to sharply touch on many uncomfortable subjects in various cartoons. This to the dismay of the residents of his hometown, who then boycott his work.

Phenomenal biographical drama could earn Joaquin Phoenix his fourth Oscar nomination. He is perfect as John Callahan, a completely derailed alcoholic who is almost completely paralyzed after an accident. This film describes how Calahan goes through the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous with pain and difficulty and how, despite his handicap, he manages to achieve success as a cartoonist.

Gus van Sant himself wrote the non-sentimental, at times pleasantly dry-comedy scenario and knows how to bring to life all the people who influence Calahan's life in their own way, aided by a perfect cast. Rooney Mara and Jack Black are the big names, but Beth Ditto made a big impression on me as Reba, an extremely direct, but very down to earth (sic!) fellow addict in the support group. But it is Jonah Hill who steals the film with a particularly beautiful understated rendition, making his moving final scene one of the absolute highlights. The editing by Gus van Sant and David Marks is pleasing to the eye and Danny Elfman's sparse score also deserves praise. One of the best movies of the year and arguably the best movie ever about alcoholism.

His drawings are often hilarious in all their (cynical) simplicity. The life story of John Callahan is anything but. That is a lot like an emotional rollercoaster with a lot of lows. Although I'm not a fan of Joaquin Phoenix, I have to admit that in this film he gives a convincing interpretation of this variegated and turbulent role. A catchy movie.

propos: I doubt whether the person responsible for the synopsis saw the film himself.

Joaquin Phoenix proves once again why he is one of the best actors of his generation. Here too he empathizes wonderfully in the role of the eccentric John Callahan. Besides being a notorious drinking organ and as a less mobile man, his greatest talent is making cartoons. Cartoons that contain the necessary satirical sharpness to view society from a critical point of view. I like this kind of humor. Some are more successful than others, but the aim is always to make people aware of situations or problems, not to offend people or target groups. But you sometimes end up in choppy water, but he don't give af*ck.

Without the playful cartoons I would have found the film a lot less interesting. It does give an extra dimension. The film title is therefore very appropriate. Self-mockery is simply one of those weapons to combat acidification and bitterness.
