I find this a beautiful and emotionally moving story. For us Western film viewers it is a bit of getting used to the slow build-up and the sometimes minimalist dialogues. Ji-hu Park plays an endearing role of the girl who grows up in a strict South Korean family, struggles with the challenge of friendship and love, and struggles with feelings of loneliness and neglect. A beautiful role also by Sae-byeok Kim as the loving teacher Jung-Ji.

Honest film about an introverted teenager, who, while looking for warmth and affection at home and at school, is disappointed because she is mostly ignored by almost everyone. That only changes when she gets Chinese lessons from a young student.

A compassionate coming-of-age story that manages to avoid sentiment and yet does not leave you unmoved. A true tour-de-force by the still young Ji-hu Park. Her joint scenes with Sae-byeok Kim as the Chinese teacher are real gems. The film ultimately gave me a very warm feeling. A beautiful, sincere film without bells and whistles.

The film doesn't do much wrong, the atmosphere is okay and life is actually depicted well. But oh this was a long sit, especially because the film brings nothing new and does nothing special. Visually quite boring, and full of clichés such as the teacher who just manages to touch the chord or a scene where the main character is dancing to herself. That has been done so often. And better too. But above all the main character and her family didn't interest me very much. It is also a somewhat distant film. And the film shows too little to justify those 130 minutes.

The only reason is actually Park's acting. Demure, introverted but not completely socially awkward and that is nice for a change. Even though I was not interested in her person, the actress does a good job. But it does not save the film. 2.0*.
