Finally a new Imaishi.

He has been busy in the meantime, of course, but mainly with series and short films. And you can see his quality in that too, but it cannot compete with the budget of a long player. This time literally, because with 110 minutes on the clock you get a big dose of adrenaline.

During the middle section there are a few scenes where the film slows down a bit, at those moments you also notice that Imaishi's strength does not lie there, fortunately that is a minor problem given the intensity of the rest of this film. There is absolutely no shortage of chaos here.

Visually it is really grand. Colorful, cool art style and perfectly edited. But ultimately it's the camera work that really blew me away. It's unbelievable where Imaishi sends his camera. Unseen and an example for every other action film ever made.

And so another 5* from my side. I have no idea whether this can compete with Dead Leaves, I have to see it again for that, but there is no doubt that it is completely unique, crazy, brilliant and completely up my alley.

5.0* and a extensive review

I expected that you (Onderhond) would appreciate this, but I didn't see five stars coming! I was less impressed than you, but after all your praise I may have to give it another chance soon: an increase to 3.5* should certainly be possible (I already had doubts about that).

Visually it is indeed fantastic: extremely dynamic, and bursting with color. And although the CGI looks a bit blocky a few times, 2D and 3D are generally wonderfully integrated here. The film is a bit reminiscent of the finale of Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse, but often accelerated and almost the entire running time, so for fans of such exuberance this is definitely recommended.

But where the film falls short for me compared to a Dead Leaves is that, where in DL the plot is just as crazy as the visuals, here the plot is so straightforward that the madness feels a lot less complete. The plot of Promare is pure mediocrity: an uninspired mix of tired clichés from all kinds of Trigger/Gainax series, with dull characters without any charisma and a plot that follows the well-known Trigger formula without a single surprise. And the poppy songs that are regularly thrown at the viewer further enhance that feeling. Visually, Promare is definitely a standout, but in other respects it's rarely memorable, and often just plain boring. That's not the end of the world - action films should mainly rely on spectacle - but a little more creativity would have been very welcome.

But hopefully a review, where I go into the film with the right expectations (enjoy the beautiful coat in which the film is dressed, its visual exuberance and constant spectacle, and take for granted the fact that the coat is worn by a characterless mannequin ), so my appreciation is somewhat.

I actually knew in advance that this wasn't going to be for me. But included in one of the MM lists of Film Pegasus, I couldn't just ignore it. Forgive me for any incorrect comparison or name, but this "Manga style" is not for me. Very busy and flashy. Explosive here and there and a sound that is artificially enhanced (during explosions or fights). You see a genre of superheroes or Marvel. It's all very colorful and the animations are nicely done, but I prefer it a bit more subdued.

A lot of it revolves around what you see, but in terms of content I thought it was just a potpourri. A bit of a twist, all confusing. Lots of fighting, lots of excess, and after a while I get the feeling of "so what?". Too bad actually.
