Visually, Weathering With You is another breath of fresh air to watch. The mix between 2D and 3D works perfectly, the raindrops feel like pure magic and it's really a pleasure to look at the environments. The film is ideal for playing with beautiful light angles, where you are constantly drooling, it is that beautiful. It is strange how a film like this can sometimes come across as photorealistic, without pretending to be photorealistic.

The plot serves the beautiful visuals in a strong way. Emotionally, it may just lack that uniqueness that Your Name does have. Maybe it's also because the movie starts a bit more difficult. But once you realize which way Shinkai wants to go with the film, it is touching and compelling at times.

I don't really understand the J-pop reviews. These are not used excessively and when deployed it feels right. Exactly at the right moments and with a good tone. Totally unobtrusive and mood-enhancing.

This is now the second Shinkai I've seen in the cinema so far. I'm going to take a look at his oeuvre soon, because this is Japanese animation the way I want to see it. In terms of animation style, but also themes. Very human, romantic, naughty (very nice here too) cheerful, touching but also with a touching touch of fantasy.

Fine.

Thought it was slightly better than the previous one. The fantasy elements are just a bit more in the background, so that the characters in real Tokyo can come to the fore a bit more. That is where Shinkai's strength lies, because pure fantasy is less his thing.

Visually another gem. The detail is extreme, the water in this film has actually become a character and the mix of 2D and 3D is flawless. Every frame is a gem. Music is also very good. Nice soundtrack with some more unusual, more modern touches that you don't often hear in these types of films. And yes, there is also some J-Pop, but rather 5 J-Pop songs than the awful American dub that is also provided. Fortunately, I was able to look neatly in the original.

The ending is also interesting. Instead of the usual sacrifice and saving the world, personal happiness is chosen. Can't imagine Disney or Pixar even daring to think of doing something like that. A bit sour for people who like to be served what they expect, all the better that Shinkai just doesn't care about that.

4.0* and a extensive review

Innovative anime in which climate change, Japanese mythology and puppy love are in a strange relationship. The starting point is a girl, Hina, who through a mystical experience gains the power to make the sun shine in a Tokyo where it rains incessantly. With us, a lot of rain is something quite negative, but in Japan they look at it differently and rain is also a symbol of abundance and prosperity. Teen romance (a recurring motif in Shinkai's films) once again plays an important role and Weathering with You certainly takes advantage of the attraction between Hina and Hodaka. Some dramatic additions ensure that the fantasy elements are never too far removed from our familiar reality, for example Suga and his daughter he sees sporadically, the fact that Hina and her brother are orphans, etc.
The result is not 100% successful, but visually I still enjoyed it a lot and this is an anime that I am enthusiastic about.
