If you have the chance to see a Studio Ghibli in the original version in the cinema, you should do so, and usually be quick before the dubbed or Dutch-language versions are shown. At 82 years old, there is now a good chance that this will be the last Hayao Miyazaki.

The name Ghibli and Miyazaki are enough to sell the film as a kind of quality label. And rightly so, what the man takes you into a wonderfully imaginative world with the necessary drama at the same time. Our own story this time with autobiographical elements. That makes for a fascinating story that draws you in. Perhaps because of sky-high expectations or because I still have to let the film sink in, it is less overwhelming than other Ghibli films. But on the other hand, it is visually worthwhile with colorful figures and beautiful decors. I am also always a fan of the accompanying music, which is sparse but very atmospheric and effective.

If you take a look at Studio Ghibli's official list, you will see that it has been since When Marnie Was There that they have released a film. And The Boy and the Heron succeeds in reaching that level. Is this the best Ghibli? Not really, but the studio almost always has a very high score with their films and this is no different now. Highly recommended for cinemas and film lovers.

Miyazaki's latest (we better not use the latest).

It's quite nice to get a real Ghibli film again after so many years. One with which the studio has anchored its reputation. Lush fantasy that is delivered with great verve for two hours. At the same time, that is also where the film's weakness lies, because despite the fact that it is all very beautiful, it is also very familiar.

As a conclusion to Miyazaki's career, it is perhaps more logical than The Wind Rises, a film that deviated somewhat from his typical style. On the other hand, Boy and the Heron also feels a bit more redundant, because you often get the feeling that it is a kind of has become best-of.

In the end, I had a lot of fun in the cinema, also because the performance is almost perfect. The detail in the animation is great, the world is interesting, the characters are fun and relatively layered, and the ending is one that can be described as "typical anime". A nice film, but somewhere I also have the feeling that Ghibli would better close its doors for good.

4.0* and a extensive review
