In 1938, a then 29-year-old banker [Johnny Flynn] traveled to Prague to help a British refugee organization working to evacuate political opponents of the Nazis who could invade Czechoslovakia at any time. Nicholas was particularly concerned about the fate of the children wandering on the streets, but the Kindertransport program is only open to Jewish children from Germany and occupied Austria. Setting up a similar program from Prague seems an impossible task, but that does not stop Nicholas from doing everything he can to give as many children as possible a safe (temporary) home in England. In 1987, the very elderly Nicholas Winton [Anthony Hopkins] is still struggling with his war past, especially because he does not know what became of the children. The denouement – a visit to a broadcast of the television program 'That's Life' – is a legendary moment in British television history and is given an extra emotional charge because the audience consists of real descendants of the children Nicholas managed to save. Furthermore, this is a well-made and acted film in which Hawes sometimes uses stylistic devices too emphatically to evoke emotion.

Moving film adaptation of the historical event surrounding the British child rescuer Nicholas Winton. Performed with verve by Anthony Hopkins.

In recent years, Hopkins has been a popular performer of the role of the fragile old man. Here too he appears to be perfect for that. Although it must also be said that Johnny Flynn equally deserves praise for the portrayal of the young Winton.

Throughout the film, the film switches continuously between 1939 and the late 1980s. A choice that works out well, does not lead to any messiness and reinforces the melancholic atmosphere of the scenes with the old Winton.

Towards the end, sentimentality takes over, although I don't have the feeling that it is exaggerated. It's more in the moving story itself. The fact that you already knew what the denouement would be hardly diminished the impact.

The film is compelling from the first minute: it is a fascinating, reality-based story, with sublime acting from Anthony Hopkins. I immediately put this on my 'Best films ever' list.

The camera work is also of great class; detailed shots, depth of field and perspective are not exaggerated but functionally a fascinating flow is achieved. The storyline is also striking: with impactful scene changes and logical jumps in time that reinforce the story, you are drawn into the fate of thousands of desperate Nazi victims and self-effacing volunteers who try to save as many children as possible from a gruesome end.

While 'its never enough' predominates for Nicolas Winton throughout his life, a beautiful final scene gives the impression that he is finally at peace with what he has been able to do. This brings us straight to one of the most powerful features of this film: the tensions and emotions are overwhelming, but they are not generated by visible atrocities or spoken words. No, doom hangs constantly in the air, oppressive, inescapable and holds you in its grip, just as Nicholas Winton did all his life.
