A gem, this movie. The starting point is a boy who grows up without a father (divorce, deceased?) and partly because of this lacks the necessary attention. It must be said that I know children in my area who can rage just as much with both parents together, while there are also plenty of children with divorced parents who don't rant.

Anyway, after a fight main character Max flees (in his fantasy?) to an island with monsters that also initially reminded me of Totoro, but are much less innocent. In a way, the monsters are just like Max, but that also creates some problems, which actually hold up a mirror to Max. The moral is clear, but don't get thrown in your face. On the contrary, in the end the way in which everyone's vulnerability, and cry for love and attention is portrayed, is quite moving. At least that's how it worked for me.

The design of the samples is really beautiful. Done largely through suits, which gives much more of a sense of authenticity than the motion capture products that populate many a movie from Lord of the Rings. But apart from the monsters there is plenty to enjoy, because from the first boat trip the area looks beautiful. Nice music too, I wouldn't put it on myself, but it suited the dreamy atmosphere of the story and images.

Truly a beautiful endearing film, which shows much more depth than the average children's film and makes you dream away for an hour and a half. 4.5*.

Beautiful film about growing up, friendship, being a leader and never wanting to grow up. That last one doesn't work. Max should grow up somehow anyway. Max's loneliness is very well depicted in the beginning as he plays with his dog and plays alone in the snow. The arrival of a man in his life more or less derails him in which he descends into a fantasy world. This world is beautifully rendered. The creatures look phenomenal. Also fantastic choice to do this practical. The photography is beautiful and the music is beautiful too. Jonze directs a beautiful childhood story with very good actors in a very mature setting.

I think this movie is very beautiful. The images, the story, the music, the costumes. I was afraid I would find it very childish, but it was not so bad. I like the humor and the characters, and I think it's well played. To be honest, I didn't think much about the message while watching it. I was especially impressed by the beautiful effect. I haven't read the book, so I can't compare. In any case, a 9. 4.5*
