The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 plot

"Fire burns brighter in the darkness"

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has survived the Hunger Games twice. But despite leaving the gory arena alive, she's still not safe. Her beloved Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) has been captured by The Capitol for revenge, and President Snow makes it clear that no one is safe. Katniss becomes the face of the revolution, an uprising of the districts that resists and starves the government that governs them. She is known to the masses as their 'mocking jay'.

Clearly a film that I don't like at all. Maybe I'll rewatch it (or catch the sequel), but there's something better waiting for me right now. The biggest problem I experience with such films is that I try to limp on two thoughts at once. On the one hand they want to bring something serious and the focus is on the dictatorial regime. On the other hand, they try to keep it light-hearted because they mainly target a (commercial) youth audience. As a result, quality and credibility are severely compromised. The fact that the film is split into 2 parts doesn't make me happy either because it's not necessary at all. Because not much happens in part 1 (and please don't talk to me about structure or depth). So everything for the franchise...

I don't have any experience with the book either, so I don't see many comparisons or connections. I also found the character and role of Peeta very simplistic, unconvincing and anything but fascinating. Katniss was also forced: people try to make a charismatic leader figure out of it, but I didn't see that at all. This seems more like a film for enthusiasts, not for movie viewers who like me "want to be with you".

The story is well put together and one day I wonder why they had to make two films of it. What if I see it that way they could easily make a movie out of it. But maybe now they could show more of what she wanted. The story doesn't really get much better, but it fits in very well with the previous films.

Thanks to some secret allies, Katniss [Jennifer Lawrence] has become the symbol of another uprising against Panem and President Snow [Donald Sutherland] at the 75th Hunger Games. Katniss has been sued for abandoning Peeta [Josh Hutcherson] and Annie [Stef Dawson], and as a result, she is not easily swayed by rebel leader President Alma Coin [Julianne Moore], who kills Katniss (who nicknamed Mockingjay) wants to use it for propaganda purposes to keep the morale of the rebels high. But Snow does not shy away from any means of quelling the rebellion early. Lots of talk and little action in this routinely made and flatly acted prelude to the grand finale.
