The Emerald Forest plot

"What kind of man would return year after year for ten years to rescue a missing boy from the most savage jungle in the world? His father."

American engineer Bill Markham moves with his family to the edge of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, where he is involved in the construction of a gigantic water dam. During these works his five-year-old son Tommy is kidnapped by a tribe from the rainforest. Bill spends every spare moment looking for his son for the next ten years and spares no expense. His persistence eventually pays off: he finds Tommy and he gets acquainted with the world of his son and the tribesmen.

Unfortunately, this film only captivated me at times. Cinematography was definitely not up to par. It was from scratch, there were continuous hard transitions, and clearly - but then I don't even find it such a problem if it was done more carefully - there are inserted macaws and swimming snakes and the like. The camera work itself was nothing to write home about either.

What started to bother me halfway through was the endless shooting. Now I always like that in Westerns that rücksichtslose mowing down Indians and such, but here it could have been much more subtle, less or different; at least those massacres didn't help the story and the message. At least if the moral of the story was the logging, and the rapid shrinking of the habitat of nearly extinct tribes.

Doesn't take away that it was a nice movie ... to have seen.

For the message still a 2.5 *

Excellent film in which a man searches for years for his son who he lost in the rainforest. The film is largely set in the rainforest of Brazil and this provides more than enough beautiful shots. A beautiful story about the western world vs an unknown civilization. Adventurous, sometimes exciting and with an obvious (but not disturbing) message.

An adventure film and at the same time an ecological drama. While a father searches for his son, who was kidnapped by Amazon Indians, he realizes how fragile the ecosystem is and how the balance between the Indians and nature is broken by the presence of the whites and the construction of a dam. Boorman is a master at filming in the jungle, and that sometimes produces magical images. The exploitation of the Indians is sad to see.
