Yip Man 2 plot

"Behind every great martial artist lies a teacher."

After Ip Man (Donnie Yen) used his martial arts against the Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War, he fled to Hong Kong in 1949 and tried to establish a Wing Chun fighting school there. When the mighty master Hung (Sammo Hung) hears this, he sets Ip Man with a perilous task. He has to earn the necessary respect in a fight against the clock against fighters of all possible styles. Even more danger looms from the side of a corrupt police officer (Charlie Mayer) and British boxing champion Twister (Darren Shahlavi). For Ip Man it is about the honor of the Chinese people but also about the opportunity to open his fighting school…

I thought this was a fun movie. Well told, enough variety and the fights are fun. The boxer is a nice addition in that regard. But that hassle with other fighting schools in the area is also quite funny and sometimes produces fireworks. Donnie Yen easily pulls the film on his own, although he isn't completely believable, he is too calm and quiet in his role, as if he is outside the events. But hey, a movie like this can have that, as can the overly British and sometimes bad accents. 3.5*.

A thin story that serves as an excuse for a series of brawls and a finale very reminiscent of Rocky IV. Yip Man [Donnie Yen], grandmaster of Wing Chun, starts his own martial arts school in Hong Kong. A cartel led by Master Hung Chun-Nam [Sammo Kam-Bo Hung] demands that he prove he is a grandmaster and pay a monthly dues. Yip Man refuses the latter and that causes the necessary problems. The fights are (even) better executed than in Yip Man with the fight between Yip and Hung (on a table with a loose tabletop) as the highlight, but the Rocky-esque apotheosis is a disappointment.

Like the first part, Yip Man 2 is very entertaining, only this time the foundation is a lot less stable.

The story is rather sparse and offers hardly any surprises. The British 'Bad Guys' in particular, apart from the Boxing of Darren Shahlavi, are totally unconvincing, both in terms of acting and their part (and motives) in the story.

What still tip the balance for Yip Man 2, of course, are the fight scenes, especially the table fight with the other school keepers is impressive and a joy to watch. Donnie Yen in the lead role is just as solid as in the first part. The greatest added value of the film, however, is the presence of Sammo Hung. His part ensures that Yip Man 2 is still reasonably close to its predecessor in quality.

All together ; slightly less than Yip Man 1, but still good viewing material that hardly bores for a moment. Good.
