The Man in the Iron Mask plot

"For the honor of a king. And the destiny of a country. All for one."

In 1638, Queen Anne of France gives birth to a boy who will inherit the throne. But what only a few people know is that a twin brother was born 20 minutes later. 22 years later, King Louis the 14th rules France with a heavy hand. The people work hard and he benefits from it. The king falls in love with young Christine, who has already been married off to Raoul, the son of one of the Musketeers. The king sends Raoul to the front to fight so he has plenty of time to court Christine. Raoul is killed during the war and the Musketeers want revenge. And then the man who has been in the king's dungeons for a long time with an iron mask comes in handy.

Nice historical film, although it never really splashes. Leonardo DiCaprio seemed a bit tame to me. It is clear that he has grown more and more in the acting profession over the years, but here he was a bit disappointing. Three musketeers try it together with d'Artagnan, but there was also no fire, but that must be due to age . Oh well, the story itself is nice, ending a bit dubious but moving forward.

“I wear the mask. It does not wear me.”

Strong movie. The three musketeers (and D'Artagnan) are played by Malkovich, Depardieu, Irons and Byrne, and you really don't need to know much to enjoy this film. And DiCaprio in a dual role is also doing well.

It is a kind of buddy musketeer film, set in 17th century France. The interplay between the actors is great to watch and the film has flair, humor, action, some drama and romance. Exchanging the one king (Louis) for his twin brother Phillippe is of course a ridiculous storyline, but director Wallace opts for a light-hearted approach and the actors also approach the material with a wink. It makes for a very nice movie.

Not very special, but solid and always entertaining historical adventure film with an effective portrayal of DiCaprio and the expected strong play of the four musketeers who give the roles a gravitas that you can also expect from actors of the caliber Jeremy Irons and Gabriel Byrne. Main plus for me is the fact that John Malkovich doesn't overact here but just plays serious and strong, which gives his character a certain threat that benefits the whole movie.

Incidentally, it's always nice to review such an old film after years and then suddenly recognize an actor in a small role who only became known later, such as Peter Sarsgaard as Malkovich's son Raoul.
