The Basketball Diaries plot

"The true story of the death of innocence and the birth of an artist."

Jim Carroll (DiCaprio) is a member of the basketball team at a Catholic school in New York. Jim and his friends, however, hardly behave like devout youths. The basketball team manager steals from the opponents' lockers and the boys' favorite pastime is experimenting with pills. Jim's life soon spirals into a downward spiral of pills, cough drops, booze and breakneck feats. Together with his best friend Mickey, he is thrown out of the team, temporarily removed from school and thrown out of the house by his mother. The boys go down the criminal path to get money and even assault an old woman. Then Jim comes into contact with heroin.

Jim Carroll - Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org

U-MV112 - Jim Carroll - People Who Died - YouTube

And so Jim Carroll just turned 60 years, 1 month and 10 days old.

This film is about a part of his life, humor, sarcasm and drama alternate in this fine film.

DiCaprio really puts his best foot forward in this story, such as the point where he has become addicted and tries to persuade his mother to give 5,...10,.....or even better $20. borrow it because he "really needs it to escape the city".

Yes, yes, do you know any more?

Also poignant are the scenes with his great friend Bobby, a 16-year-old boy who is dying of leukemia. Gripping for him, still an adolescent, and for the viewer(s).

Our appreciation has increased for all these actors who play really well!

An 8!

I remember fragments of the movie The Basketball Diaries, but as a whole it was still new. A strong film about derailed drug use by a group of young people. Although Leonardo DiCaprio's real breakthrough and fame only came after Titanic, he also acted in a number of strong films before. What's eating Gilbert Grape is one of them, but this The basketball diaries is just as much. The film is based on the life of one Jim Carroll.

The film starts off lightly and carefree. A group of teenagers are a promising high school basketball team. Growing up in suburban New York, they are having a good time despite the conservative, rule-hungry school structure. In their spare time they mostly get into mischief. The turning point is the death of one of their friends. The group falls apart and experimenting with narcotics is quite easy though.

The film also has one meaningless, but admittedly short violent scene, a dream after all. Reportedly, the comparisons with Columbine High were made. It's a shame really, because the two things have nothing to do with each other. On the other hand, a rather unnecessary scene. The basketball diaries is above all an excellent picture about what drugs can do to your body, environment and future. Rock-solid performance by a young DiCaprio as he cries and begs for a shot or a little cash. The contrast between a promising boy and a decrepit junkie is large and cleverly rendered. It's also nice to see a young Wahlberg appear. The basketball diaries is a moving tragic film, one to think about for a moment. Events Every Parent Fears...

“Just my own naked self and the stars breathing down, it's beautiful.”

Leonardo DiCaprio shows all his talent and class here. It's nice to see a young DiCaprio and Wahlberg here anyway, and The Basketball Diaries is a strong film otherwise. Towards the end, Jim's drug addiction, and the way he's coming back to it, is really fast (skipping some steps I think), but the beginning and middle sections are excellent. Juliette Lewis also has a strong role, and her few scenes with DiCaprio are gold.
