The Gorgonites against the Commandos, hell yeah! A highly intelligent chip is implanted into a live action figure line and then a fight erupts between two groups. In this battle of live action figures, humanity in the form of two families also joins in merrily. They side with the hideous anti-heroes, the Gorgonites. Good choice, I sided with them too. Anyway, the action figures do come across as tight through CGI and dolls (at least that's what I read), they look good. The jokes are a bit silly, but all in all I thought this was a very nice and entertaining film.

Successful mess.

I used to be more impressed by this, but now so long ago that I don't remember anything about it. The movie is typically one of those movies that doesn't take itself seriously for a moment and also a movie that's typically a Joe Dante movie.

A lot of references, Dante knows how to make an entertaining mess of it again. The cast is pretty good, Smith is fun, Dunst is cute and Jones is pretty funny as Chip's voice. The animation has become a bit old in the meantime, but is not a big pain point.

The last scenes are full of action and enjoyment. Nowhere is it too gross or anything else, but the film is generally funny. I had a lot of fun with this one, so it turned out pretty well. Maybe a little on the more exciting side for kids, but I thought it was all fine. It takes a bit too long though, this is indeed a film that should last around 90 minutes.

Put Toy Story in the hands of the director who got us Gremlins, and you get Small Soldiers. Toy Story may have more charm, Small Soldiers is more interesting. Joe Dante has stuck in the 80's with teenagers who will solve the problem of killer toys and save their parents. Those teens are a young Kirsten Dunst and Gregory Smith. For the latter, it will also be his best-known film, except for a supporting role in The Patriot. In the adults we see Kevin Dunn who I only know from small supporting roles, but who always steals the show again and again. And Phil Hartman who is best known as the voice behind Troy McClure (and others) in The Simpsons. Small Soldiers would be his last feature film. He was murdered later that year.

The film is not really good, it remains childhood nostalgia. As mentioned, Joe Dante has stuck in the 80s, and you can tell he's out of date. In addition, Gregory Smith is not good enough to carry the film. And it's also quite cliché. But if you like the genre, it's still quite enjoyable.
