Brought Beast in the cinema tonight, and to put the word joke in there: it was quite a beast of a movie. And no dragon luckily. And now I stop.

In Beast we see how Moll, a girl with strict parents and few or no friends, is slowly bursting out of her cage under the influence of her blossoming relationship with misfit Pascal. All this on a fantastically filmed Jersey, with beautiful nature views, coasts, fields, but also in the midst of an enormous local tension after several girls have been kidnapped and murdered. And this whole tumultuous relationship and everything it brings to the family and the community is accompanied by a lot of Sturm und Drang. I don't think there's much value in going into further detail about the plot, but Beast was an impressive, intense piece of film. Moll and Pascal are both very convincingly portrayed, just like the oppressive environment from which Moll comes, and the dynamics between them come across very natural. And there is always a sultry tension, which eventually explodes towards the end, although the somewhat overly explicit ending is a bit of a squeeze. Anyway, not a happy or easy seat, but I'm under the impression, especially for a debut. Not quite the full blow for the time being, but so far well on the way to a good position on my annual list.

“Can you keep a secret?”

Excellent movie. Jessie Buckley is truly a discovery, Johnny Flynn is strong, Jersey is a beautiful location and the eerie and foreboding atmosphere is fantastic. Great work by Michael Pierce, and even though not much happens, you're on the edge of your seat the whole time. The whodunnit plot, the directing and the acting ensure that you remain captivated. There are a number of twists in the film that I saw coming, but the brilliant and gruesome final part blew me away. Great job.

topper. Wonderful suspense, characters where even after the credits you don't know exactly what to do with them, get maximum results from minimum data, all fine. Superb location shots that really should make you see Beast on a big screen, and a strong lead by Irish singer/actress Buckley who plays the stars of the beautiful sky. Lucky that something so beautiful pops up from the unexpected corner, after you've seen one predictable uniformity after the other. Enjoyed.
