Soulless (Kershner tries to imitate Verhoeven's style, but fails magnificently) and above all just ugly; camera work is ridiculous, Robo's suit is suddenly blue and clearly made of plastic, the special effects are much worse than in the low-budget original and the absence of Poledouris is also a big loss.

Make sequel.

Although I have to admit it's been a while since I've seen part 1. However, I gave it a pretty high score, it doesn't come close to that in light years. Cheesy B material that lives up to the shaky image of the sequel.

It's fortunate that RoboCop's design is quite iconic, as the suit itself looks very plastic and fake. The sequel cop is even a bit worse, an ugly, awkward and unimpressive appearance that clearly misses the intended effect.

The humor is also quite skewed, characters are quite stupid (that child) and the Nazi company is beyond the satire. The attempt to make it all bigger and more gruesome is obvious, but the execution is pretty lousy.

Fortunately, the ending brings at least some over the top action, which saves the film somewhat. But only from a complete slaughter, because otherwise there is little fun to be gained from it. Cheap crap, that quickly becomes the third look before the sentence has completely sunk.

Interesting that this is by Kershner by the way gives an indication that his influence on the Star Wars universe has not been as great as the status of that film suggests.

2.0*

Great sequel and in some respects (not in its entirety) even better than the first part. Not so much more violent than part 1 (which was really grosser), but with more action.

Furthermore, the satire has been improved: with funnier commercials and now not only corporate corruption is being mocked, this time taking on totalitarian, Nazi traits: check those red-white-black colors and security men in black in the second half! The softie mentality is also getting hit hard. For example, there is a left-wing tuthola psychologist who sees criminals as victims of society and has Robocop reprogrammed into a real Dutch police officer, who only pats criminal boys over the head, talks like a hippie wimp, spews tile wisdom, doesn't tackle a single criminal. and plays the good Hendrik while de-escalating. Fortunately, he finds himself again to blow up the necessary scum.

Also the villain is actually better developed than in part 1: he has more motivation than just money and looks more like a deranged cult leader who wants to make the world "happy" with his cheap new drug Nuke.

I also liked the meeting with Murphy's widow. The Robocop theme remains great and the soundtrack has also been nicely expanded with new tunes. Nancy Allen also gets plenty to do in her important supporting role.

The film lacks the shock factor and novelty of part 1 and cannot compensate for this. Here too, certain effects are a bit dated, Robo without a mask is sometimes too clearly a mechanical doll and the necessary stop-motion is used again for the new OCP robot (less inspired Rococop 2). Also, here and there too clear blue screen. But for the standards of 1990 certainly not below par.

Oh yes and there is an official or something given the last name Sphincter... this means sphincter!
