Obviously made with a lot of love and attention, but I find it very difficult to keep watching the entire film. The actors do their best, especially Ron Perlman, Selma Blair and Rupert Evans give excellent performances, but the characters just don't captivate me that much, Hellboy's bored comments get boring themselves at some point, and the villains have no human character. , humorous or intriguing dimension. On the other hand, the monsters look nice, the set design in the Moscow caves is really fantastic, and unlike many films from the superhero or comics film, the final battle or the last half hour is not an anticlimax, and that makes a lot of good. At least I liked it the second time more than when I first saw it (10? years ago), so maybe I should give it a third chance – at least I remember I Hellboy 2 did, and I've heard good things about the remake/reboot as well, so maybe I'll appreciate this first part more in due course. At least it's not the visuals.

There was a reason I'd never seen this one before. Just for the sake of del Toro I wanted to tick it off. This isn't for me at all. A precursor to the Marvel genre. I also suddenly know where The shape of water comes from.

That Nazi scene in the beginning could be stolen from me and what about the character Hellboy? I'm not sure: arrogance and rudeness interspersed with a bit of (mediocre) humour. Usually not a good combination, I don't think the creature resembles anything with that cigar too.

Apart from all this a fine casting with Perlman. He is cut out for this role. Substantive but weak and I already saw much better of del Toro. Disappointing…
