When you see Martin Campbell as the director of this film in 2011, you think you will certainly see an entertaining film after a wonderful first Zorro (and a solid sequel) and a rock-solid reboot of James Bond. Critics and the public thought completely different after seeing this film, I found the film quite enjoyable myself.

The movie starts cliche and ends cliche and everything in between is cliche. nothing new, nothing innovative, but in itself it remains entertaining and it does reach the level of most superhero films of decent quality (Captain America 1, Thor 1, Hulk, Iron Man 2, Dark Knight returns etc) but it doesn't get anywhere a topper. Reynolds plays well and in itself the cast does that completely, but they have just too little to start with to make something really strong of their characters. The action is entertaining (especially for space action, I don't like it that often) and the humor is plentiful (perhaps too much for DC fans/movies) but I liked it and also liked the powers that Hal Jordan had I quite entertaining. But you notice so much that the film was designed to be able to participate more, a similar feeling as with the first Thor and the first CA and then it is difficult to convince, especially in this special setting. The final was entertaining but I certainly wasn't on the edge of my seat.

Green Lantern is not the dramatically bad movie for me than others say. The film is entertaining, solid and entertains enough for this superhero film that relies mainly on the solidity that entertained me

Phew.

DC has actually been trying to match the popularity of Marvel for years, but seems to be unable to do so. They are behind the times and try to quickly copy the success without too much insight or vision.

Green Lantern is one of those films that has fallen victim to that visionless approach. I'm anything but a big fan of Marvel, but compared to this thing they make masterpieces. It is therefore no surprise that there was no direct sequel to this one.

The whole space opera thing is painful to watch. The CG is aesthetically unsightly and technically outdated. Ugly figures and kitschy environments immediately set the tone. That bad guy is really hilarious too. The level really doesn't improve either, especially when GL uses his powers it's hard to comprehend how this survived any quality check.

The first half hour is an easy Top Gun rip-off, with Reynolds and Lively as the most unlikely flying duo ever. Lively is clearly only in it as a romantic interest, the rest of her role does not fit at all. Perhaps the only nice thing about their relationship is that she recognizes him right away. At least we are spared from that nonsense.

Otherwise just 2 hours of kitsch and ugliness. Campbell fails to create a coherent universe, the plot is too silly for words and 120 minutes is actually 90 too many. Nah, this movie deserves its negative image.

0.5*

I really didn't like this movie at all. Really turned it off half way through, and that while I care about this genre!
