An utterly ridiculous film in which Boston is destroyed by Godzilla and Godira. Other classic creatures from the Godzilla universe are resurrected to save Earth from humanity, including Mothra, the evil niece of Maya the Bee and a distant cousin of Terry Ruxpin. An extremely melodramatic and utterly banal human story has been built around it, but I don't think I'm betraying too much when I say that the long run-up to the finale consists mainly of endless scientific bullshit, tough people talk and doomed attempts to destroy the giant monsters. with all kinds of bombs, grenades and other explosive material. A mission that is just as hopeless as this hopeless pile of noise.

Oof.

The sad thing about a movie like this is that you're looking at 130 minutes of potential, but it never comes out. This is a massive action spectacle where a number of giant monsters compete against each other ... but it almost makes you fall asleep.

So just about everything is disappointing. The monsters lack weight, it actually rarely feels like they are really racing through the cities and destroying everything. This is partly due to the annoying weather effects that should make the CG work (which is also not great) a bit easier. But the directing also leaves a lot to be desired. The introduction of the monsters is not very impressive, the action is broken up and the pace is neither fish nor meat. Too fast to really enjoy the set pieces, the slow and random to really develop a rhythm.

Really don't understand how a Michael Dougherty suddenly becomes the head of a movie like this. Has a few nice horror movies to its name, but this is something completely different. Sounds like a movie for Bay now, where he can go completely wild. Unfortunately, Dougherty isn't even close yet.

Add to that the terrible acting, laughable dialogue and an unhealthy appetite for Hollywood melodrama and you have a film that for 130 minutes tries hard to be seriously spectacular, but is not a second. Fortunately, there is now the anime film series.

1.0*

Godzilla from 1998 and King Kong from 2005 were criticized at the time. But in hindsight, they were still better than the later movies from the Monster Universe. King Kong from 2017 was still visually worthwhile, but the Godzilla films are so dark that you are actually watching nighttime rain scenes with the occasional monster for 2 hours. There is also no more suspense or adventure, something you see in many movies these days. It doesn't necessarily have to be more light-hearted, but the harder approach can work. But there must be more than that. The monsters have done their best in this movie. Another show a different cast that knows their place among the monsters and a better script. Then you can still do beautiful things with these monster films.
