A very entertaining action movie with John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, two actors I can appreciate. I first saw Jonathan in Woody Allen's Match Point and really liked him: he plays his roles more and more subdued and I think he's a charming person. The contrast between his role and Travolta's is what makes this film so much fun! I've seen this movie several times and that's saying something!

Did Meyers just get new teeth or something? He laughed like a farmer with a toothache. OK, the movie: I thought the story was very strong. The effect was sometimes just a bit too exaggerated and sometimes just a bit too stupid. Also good humor every now and then. The action was excellent. There was a steady pace throughout the film. Both men acted well. You have to see through the role of Travolta a bit, but he put down a great character in it. Why did such a group of crooks offer themselves to him one by one during a fight? They all had a better chance at the same time. That's an example of what I meant by "stupid" above....

Based on a story by Luc Besson and then you know that you have to swallow quite a bit of nonsense to be able to digest the entertainment behind it. James Reese [Jonathan Rhys Meyers] is the security guard for the American ambassador in Paris but has been pushing for a position in Special Operations for some time. He gets the chance to prove himself by teaming up with Special Ops agent Charlie Wax [John Travolta] with whom he must prevent a planned terrorist attack. Travolta plays his part as if it were a psychotic hit man and for that reason alone is implausible as an FBI agent, but the lack of chemistry between the two protagonists is the biggest flaw in this smooth but negligible crime thriller. A popcorn movie avant la lettre, but not exactly in the good sense of the word.
