Nice debut.

Mr. Rodriguez's debut is quite recognizable in style, and I even think that El Mariachi shows some much better directing points compared to Rodriguez's contemporary directing. A certain freshness can be recognized here, which is less present in his other films.

It is certainly cheap, and it often feels that way. Still, it is great that the total budget was only 7,000 euros, because it is all quite large. Of course the costs in such a Mexican village will be lower than a location in Los Angeles or New York, for example, but it is also great that it has been developed so extensively.

I was completely surprised that the directing is quite solid and is not often held back by the low budget. The prison opening and the murder of the three gentlemen by Martinez in a bar were scenes that were built up pretty well. The calm but ominous build-up of tension often works very well.

The promotion isn't too special, and not necessarily because of the budget. Mainly standard bangs overloaded with a lot of slow-motion that eventually falls into repetition. Some clumsy editing here and there, and especially put together just a bit too slowly, while in other scenes there is suddenly an abundance of speed.

Acting is pretty bad, but Martinez and Marquardt do a pretty good job. Especially the first one knows how to give his character a number of cool traits. I thought Gallardo was a bit less, isn't really suitable for his role, and Gomez wasn't too good either. It's actually mostly from the villains.

Here and there a few things are obvious, but in general I was positively surprised by a fresh approach and excellent build-up of tension. As expected, the pay-offs are a bit more moderate and the slow-motion too prominent. It's quite a decent debut, but for the rest it doesn't impress much more than that.

Excellent low budget film, cannot be emphasized enough. Despite the limited resources, something decent is delivered. You may not be able to mask everything (special effects, actors...), but apart from that it was definitely above average.

The plot, for example, also contributes to this. Through the metamorphosis, the mariachi has become a mythical figure, which is further developed in Desperado. He comes across a bit clumsy in this film, although you shouldn't underestimate him either.

It is also very nice that action and humor flow into each other effortlessly. Pretty dry at times and I like that. Great debut!

From 1992; then they were already on the Corona. Give me the alpha version.....

The story was pretty well put together. I didn't like the cast that was supposed to portray it. But I liked the way of filming again, because it was so special: especially the small accelerations, the sporadic humorous elements, the camera angles and the close-ups. This shows that you can still make a reasonable film with a low budget. Great playing time. On to the next Mariachi.
