"Every bloodline has a beginning."

The fifteenth century. The young prince Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans) lives a happy life with his family and rules over a small kingdom. When the peace he established is threatened by a murderous sultan, Vlad travels to Broken Tooth Mountain, where he encounters an ancient wizard. The two strike a deal, the prince gains the strength and speed to destroy his enemies, but will have an insatiable thirst for human blood as a result. He becomes the first vampire the world has ever seen: Dracula.

Revise again. Good film in a historical setting that is not often discussed, especially the struggle of the Eastern European peoples against the Turkish invasion of the Balkans. Luke Evans plays the part superbly. He has a regal air and the chemistry with his family was believable. Costumes were beautiful, that dragon armor or golden armor of Mehmet. Action was sometimes a bit too cluttered, especially in the beginning (eg in the 1 against 1000 fight). Dracula's gifts were well filmed, kind of x-ray vision or turning into a bat cloud. Ending was also sublime, the final battle between Vlad and Mehmet in the tent full of silver or how Vlad blushes his vampire subjects to sunlight to save his son..
Good start for Universal. Hope we see Evans play more movies like Dracula.

Dracula Untold is a superfluous and over the top movie in which Dracula is some kind of superhero. The film adds absolutely nothing to the Dracula universe and is full of clichés. It's a shame that this uninspired film was made. It has almost nothing to do with Bram Stoker's creation anymore and it feels like a lack of respect for Stoker to me. The director delivers a nobody's valley full of clichés and boring scenes. Dracula is a kind of Vlad The Impaler crossed with Superman. Too absurd for words.

Fortunately, Luke Evans is not the cause of the failure of the film. Evans plays a reasonable Dracula. Too bad for him that he couldn't play Dracula in a more serious movie. Dominic Cooper is not even doing as badly as the Turkish king Mehmet, at least he is not a source of irritation. The man who completely saves the film from destruction is Charles Dance. He may have a supporting role, but he outperforms the rest of the cast. Dance is a master of supporting roles and this film is no exception.

Dracula Untold relies almost entirely on CGI. That one looks nice. Add to that excellent camera work and you have a nice film from a technical point of view. The fights are massive and look great. Very sad that the rest is so below par. No, this was pretty bad. I'm starting to get a little tired of all those superhero movies. It is crazy for words that Dracula is not spared this phenomenon. Bram Stoker is turning in his grave.

2*

Not a bad movie at all. The story is quite nice, the acting is quite good and at times it just looks really good. Nice action and the pace is well kept. I found it quite entertaining.
