Soy Cuba plot

During the final days of Batista's regime, four separate stories are set in Cuba. In the first story Mary's friend discovers that she is actually a prostitute, in the second an old farmer is told that his farm has been sold to an international organization, in the third story students distributing pamphlets for Castro are shot by the police, and in the final story a man is forced to leave his home by bombing, after which he joins the guerrillas.

A blind person can see that the camera work is off/insanely good (Boogie Nights anyone). The reason why I will never forget the film and can now count as one of my favorites is that all 4 stories are about the same strength (and I usually find that a problem with films with different episodes). In addition, they are all dramatically strong and all match the content equally well. Perhaps the point was made a bit too emphatic by the 4 narrations, but went into it so much that I found even that reinforcing. I also like it when a film just plainly shouts out what the message is. One of the best movies I've ever seen. 5 stars.

The smoke machine is working overtime in this magnificent Soviet art. Only my second film by Kalatazov, but I don't think there are ten directors who can tell a story better through images than this man. Eisenstein 2.0, that's it. In fact, Soy Cuba is one of the best movies I've seen in years. It reaches a point where it doesn't really matter what else appears on the image, everything is good and wonderful. Yo soy Fidel!

This film has already been praised a lot if you read the reviews on it. I largely agree with this. I had little background with the film and therefore had no idea that it is actually 4 separate fragments that all reflect what Cuba is or what it has evolved into throughout history. Especially the last two episodes emphasize the battle between Batista and Castro. The second film focuses on natural resources and the first film focuses more on the population.

What stands out throughout the film is the great cinematography and beautiful images that are meticulously executed. Black and white images always have something magical to me, but here they come out beautifully. Also because many camera angles are taken from a frog's perspective. Whether it's the majestic white church or the pearly white foliage, the effect is top notch. Great opening scene that immediately puts you in the mood.

I also found the third fragment interesting, especially when the revolt broke out between the revolutionaries and Batista's guard. Indeed, perhaps some biased scenes, but therefore not made with love and above all a lot of skill. Nice!
