Both stylistically and substantively I have some ambivalent feelings about Les choses de la vie. The style itself is fine, but the flash-forwards feel a bit haphazard and are not used consistently throughout the film. In terms of content, the film has to rely on its casual, little plot-driven and therefore quite natural storytelling, but it lacks a bit of real depth. I felt that the film would have benefited from an extra half hour to flesh out the characters more. Although Sautet's hand is certainly visible, the level of Un coeur and hiver is therefore not reached if you ask me.

Beautiful film. If the scene of the accident and what followed it is still engraved on my retina since I saw that film for the first time when it was released, I should also mention the wonderful, above all subtly simple and natural renditions of Michel Piccoli, Romy Schneider and also by Lea Massari and Jean Bouise. The drivers, the doctor are also very well cast.... It seems that the filming of the accident took more than 10 days of film work.
In any case, full of ideas. Just think the victim's thinking aloud after the incident, the feast with 2 types of guests, the dying, the threatening music...
Film to watch over and over again.

Very nice film, right from the start with those dreamy slow-motion images. Interesting original set-up, great play by Piccolo (think of a picture of a Frenchman and you get him) and Schneider, nice human interaction, atmospheric, good pace, emotionally involved and captivating from start to finish. The film shows life as it is. At most towards the end there is still just too long, stop a little earlier and the film would have been perfect. Now 4.5*.
