That's how I like them! Un Coeur en Hiver is a pure character film, with deep dialogues, good acting and above all very convincing characters. You quickly get caught up in the minds of the characters to think along with them, to understand them. Because of this dynamic with the viewer, I think that everyone will look at the film differently.
The core is Stephane's apparent inability to feel love and his honesty about it. It becomes especially interesting when he characterizes his friendship with Maxime as a transaction of mutual interests. Camillia sees this as a devaluation of that relationship but subsequently cannot muster any love for someone from whom she does not receive any love in return, which ultimately makes love a kind of barter. At the end I still had doubts about Stephane's emotional life. He seems a lot more sympathetic and honest than bon vivant Maxime. Are feelings the only thing that counts? Isn't he actually fooling himself and others with his cold words? And what does the assisted suicide he provides his best friend say about his ability to love?
The acting in this high-quality drama is fantastic. Auteuil in particular plays a perfect role. I can't say much about Emmanuelle Beart, she is too beautiful to give an objective assessment. What an angel. The cinematography of Un Coeur en Hiver may not be more than conventional, but it does support the strong points of the film very well. Every now and then there are enough beautiful shots to make it visually not boring (for example the conversation in the car). The beautiful music scenes do the rest and give this typical European quality film even more allure. I am impressed.

Film about romance, rejected love,...sure, but also a psychological recit in which Sautet knows how to create a special, subtle atmosphere and keeps it interesting. Of course he can count on a couple of excellent actors, like the beautiful Emmanuelle Béart and an excellent Daniel Auteuil, as the man who excludes friendship and love from his heart, hence the title of this film.

If one sentence reaches the mouth directly from the heart, it must be true. It is this sentence that puts Stephane's hidden emotional life in a different light. Daniel Auteuil can portray a twisted personality like no other, not grand but extremely minimal and refined, especially his gaze gives the impression of dealing with an enigmatic being. That one sentence, after which Camille disappears from the picture in the car with tearful eyes and the film ends, speaks volumes.

... "For a long time I thought he was the only one I loved." ...
